At a glance: DEXA scan alternative
| Topic | What to record or compare | Interpretation limit |
|---|---|---|
| BIA | Convenient home trend with controlled conditions | Hydration can move the result |
| Calipers | Useful with skilled repeatable technique | Self-measurement is noisy |
| Photos | Fast visual trend and physique context | Not clinical; setup matters |
A cheaper measurement may answer a different question
DEXA estimates bone mineral, fat and lean soft tissue using X-ray attenuation. A photo records surface appearance. A tape measures circumference. Calling all three “body scans” hides important differences.
If your clinician needs a bone-density or other diagnostic assessment, a photo app is not an alternative. If the question is whether your waist or appearance changed between check-ins, a simpler record may be sufficient.
Compare methods by inputs, not a single accuracy ranking
BIA depends on an electrical measurement and a prediction equation, with results affected by protocol and device. Calipers require consistent skinfold technique and an appropriate equation. Tape-based calculators use circumference inputs and population assumptions.
Published work on an image-based three-compartment model used additional inputs and a defined protocol. It does not establish the accuracy of every consumer photo app. The evidence review separates these claims.

Build a comparison you can repeat
Keep the same device, measurement location and preparation routine over time. Do not treat a change from one method to another as a real tissue change. Record the method name next to each number.
Use the Navy calculator for a tape-based estimate, photo calculator for photo context, or progress photos when the visual record is the main goal. None promises DEXA-equivalent results.
Limits and safety
LeanLens content is informational fitness guidance, not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Photo-based analysis should be used for trend direction and practical next steps, not clinical decisions.
FAQ
Can a photo replace a DEXA scan?
Not for bone density or clinical assessment. It may be a useful separate record of visible progress.
Why do my scale and DEXA disagree?
They use different measurement signals and models. Device protocol, preparation and assumptions can also affect the estimates.
